Tragedy struck in Bauchi when 38 people reportedly died after they drowned in kirfi River, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State when their boat capsized while crossing the overflowing river.
Chairman of Kirfi Local Government Council, Alhaji Bappa Abdu Bara (Danmalikin Bara) disclosed this Tuesday in Bauchi while fielding question from reporters.
He said: “I want to commiserate with the people of Kirfi, Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole over the loss of our brothers on their way to their farms. They entered canoe they were 40 in number on Monday, 7th October 2019, and unfortunately, all of them were drowned only two people escape, but the remaining 38 drowned.”
The Chairman further said: “We discovered two dead bodies along Badara after we conducted search and rescue with local experts in waterways, we didn’t get anyone among the drowned victims we suspected all of them must have died. we pray to Almighty Allah to forgive the soul of the people who lost their lives.”
Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor, Sen Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has donated N10 million to the families of the 30 people who drowned in Kirfi River, Kirfi Local Government Area of the state.
The Governor who announced the donation during a sympathy visit to the area commiserated with the families of the victims and expressed shock over the incident, saying that already out of the figure, 15 people have been rescued.
The governor also announced the constitution of a committee comprising of Commissioners of Works and Transport and that of Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim and Abdulrazak Nuhu Zaki and the Caretaker Chairman of Kirfi LGA Alhaji Bappa Abdu to ensure judicious distribution of the donation.
The Chairman of Kirfi Local Government Area, Alhaji Bappa Abdu expressed gratitude to the governor for the donation and promised that it will be judiciously distributed to the affected families.
The Governor was accompanied by an elder statesman, Alhaji Bello Kirfi, Chief of Staff Government House Bauchi, Alhaji Abubakar Kari, State Head of Service, Alhaji Nasiru Yalwa, Commissioners of Works and Transport and that of Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim and Abdulrazak Nuhu Zaki and State PDP chairman Alhaji Hamza Koshe Akuyam, among others.
