The All Progressives Congress APC Caucus in the National Assembly has rejected the adoption of direct primary mode for the selection of candidates for elective positions in the state.
Senator Binta Garba, who addressed a press conference alongside other members of the Caucus at the National Assembly on Tuesday, said that lawmakers from the state fully participated in the meeting of the State Executive Committee of the party, during which the decision to adopt indirect primary for elective offices was taken due to the peculiarity of the state.
Garba further said members of the Caucus are in agreement with the decision of the State Executives of the party on the adoption of indirect primary because Adamawa State has no updated register of members of the party and people who recently defected to the party may not be able to vote or be voted for if the present register is used.
The caucus leader and other members therefore argued that using the present register of members will certainly affect the credibility of the outcome of the primary election.
The lawmakers also said that members of other political parties are bent on destroying the APC in Adamawa state and that it would certainly affect the credibility of the outcome of the primary election.
They also argued that Adamawa being one of the states having serious security challenges as a result of Book Haram attacks in the state cannot conduct peaceful election in some parts of the local governments in the northern part of the state especially in areas bordering Sambisa forest.
The nine lawmakers in their press statement also opined that the logistics involved in conducting the elections through the indirect mode in the state is quite cheaper compared to direct means.
