Cleaner rapes mother of four

A bank cleaner, Essien Akpan, who allegedly raped his neighbour’s wife, was on Thursday brought before an Ajegunle Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Akpan, 35, of No. 19, Prince Fadine Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, was arraigned on a one-count charge of sexual assault before Mrs L.Y. Balogun.

Prosecuting Sergeant Kokoye Olusegun said the alleged incident occurred on March 30, at about 2am, at the defendant’s address.

He said Akpan had unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman, a mother of four.

It was alleged that the defendant had been making love advances to the woman, which she always turned down.

On the day of the alleged incident, she came outside at about 2am to pick her children’s clothes from the line because it was about to rain, unaware that the defendant was lurking.

He allegedly pounced on her from behind, pulled off her wrapper and forced himself on her.

She screamed for help, but none came.

Olusegun said: “The defendant was arrested after the victim called her husband who was out of Lagos, to inform him of what had happened to her.”

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 168(d) Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

But Akpan pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Balogun granted him N50, 000 bail, with two sureties in the like sum.

She adjourned further hearing till September 17.
