Two leading aspirants for the House of Representatives Speakership of the 10th National Assembly, Rep. Aliyu Betara and Rep. Yusuf Gagdi, agreed to step down for Rep. Tajuddeen Abbas after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
This was disclosed to State House correspondents by the Vice President after the meeting on Sunday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Shettima described the truck between the candidates as a huge relief to the party and thanked the aspirants for their commitment to the unity and progress of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Shettima particularly thanked the outgoing Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Governor of Niger State, and the APC Deputy National Chairman (North) for brokering the truce.
“The President was touched by their gesture because what binds us together is superior to whatever that divides us.
“We are one big family and we cannot thank them enough for their gracious act, and together we shall all be ready for Tuesday”, the Vice-President said.
The election for new leaders of the 10th House of Representatives is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) and the APC hierarchy has picked Tajudeen Abbas (Kaduna) as its preferred candidate for the post of Speaker, and Benjamin Kalu (Abia), for Deputy Speaker.
