It may be the biggest announcement on the political scene as National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said he will be contesting for the office of the president in 2023.
Tinubu also disclosed that he has informed President Muhammadu Buhari about his presidential ambition. Recall that Buhari refused to mention his preferred aspirant among persons being speculated to be interested in succeeding him during a recent interview with Channels TV. The President had told the interviewers that mentioning his chosen one could lead to his being eliminated.
But speaking to State House correspondents on Monday after meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the former Lagos State governor said he is qualified to run the country.
He described running for the presidency as a life-long ambition.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had in October 2021 inaugurated the South-West Agenda 2023, a political movement mobilising support for Tinubu to contest the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu is viewed as super wealthy and highly influential, thereby making his ambition one that many political watchers take seriously. He deployed these assets to ensure Buhari emerged as President in 2015 and is believed to have also backed Buhari’s return in 2019. Some say both men made a pact that the presidency should return to the South West in 2023.
Former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim is another high profile aspirant who has formally announced that he will running for the presidency. Anyim belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
