The United Nations Women has said that an estimated $1.5trillion is lost globally owing to the high ;level of violence against women.
Also leading to a huge economic loss globally, is the lack of opportunities for women, deputy Country Representative of the UN Women, Mr. Lansana Wonneh, said at a joint symposium for special needs groups in Abuja on Saturday. Wonneh was represented at the event by the national programme officer, UN Women, Mrs Patience Ekeoba,
He said, “For estimated 736million women, one in three has been subjected to physical or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence or both, at least once in their life”.
He went further to say that, though there is limited documentary evidence evidence of violence against older women globally, evidence showed that they faced various forms of violence, including neglect, abuse, isolation, abandonment, maltreatments, physical, sexual, emotional and physiological violence, leading to poor health outcomes for older women.
