The South African government has detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidinma Adetshina, over allegations of forgery.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, Rungo, a Mozambican national, was arrested at a hideout in Cape Town on Saturday.

The arrest comes after officials discovered irregularities in her residency status, leading to her being declared persona non grata in September 2024.

The Department of Home Affairs spokesperson stated that Rungo’s South African documentation was withdrawn in September 2024 after it was found to have been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.

This development is linked to the controversy surrounding Chidinma Adetshina’s nationality and allegations of identity theft levelled against her mother.

Chidinma Adetshina had previously withdrawn from the Miss South Africa pageant due to the controversy.

The Department of Home Affairs has also announced plans to cancel the identity and travel documents of both Chidinma Adetshina and her mother, who may face fraud charges.
