Abuja on lock down for APC national convention

There is tight security in the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday as security operatives locked down parts of Abuja for the All Progressives Congress’ presidential convention.

Armed policemen blocked the various access roads to the Eagle Square, venue of the convention and forced motorists to take alternative routes to their destinations.

The roads leading to the three arms zone where the Square is located were also blocked by policemen with their vehicles.

The blockade of the main access road to the Eagle Square, Shehu Shagari Way, and Ahmadu Bello Way led to traffic gridlock at other routes.

Soldiers and policemen were seen maintaining security at the Eagle Square where hundreds of delegates from all parts of the country had converged for the programme.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence operatives and Federal Road Safety Corps personnel were also on hand to complement other security agencies at the convention ground.

The NSCDC spokesman for the FCT Command, David Akinbinu, said about 2,500 operatives were deployed for the convention.

The atmosphere at the Eagle Square was calm as the delegates trooped into the venue in groups holding banners and fliers of their favourite candidates.
