Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan is most likely to resign from the federal cabinet to contest for governorship in Taraba State in December, Frontline News Online has learnt.
Sources close to Alhassan insist that she has not resigned her appointment as minister as being reported online.
According to the source, Alhassan is still a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and will be contesting for the party’s governorship ticket.The former lawmaker ran for governorship in 2011 on the APC platform.
Friends of the minister disclosed that the misconception must have risen out of a letter she wrote to the President weeks back, seeking his support as she is interested in contesting for Taraba governorship election in 2019.
The minister wrote the letter weeks back and Buhari only a few days ago replied her indicating his support and promising backing to ensure that aspirants enjoy a level playing ground.
The Women Affairs minister is believed to have made up her mind to run under the APC thus ending speculation within political circles that she would dump the party for PDP, following the movement of former Vice-President , Atiku Abubakar to the main opposition.
Close associates have argued that Alhassan is not yet considering her resignation since the constitution states that she is could remain in the federal cabinet up untill a month to election.
Moreover both her letter to the President as well as the President’s reply did not raise the issue of her resignation.
