The Akwa-Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, on Monday, announced that six men have been arrested for the serial rape and assault of a 13-year-old boy.
Azare announced the arrest of the suspects during his maiden briefing at the command’s headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.
The Akwa-Ibom police boss disclosed that the minor was repeatedly sodomized by the suspects, he identified as Idara Itam Daniel (23), David Udoh James (23), David Bassey Bassey (26), Okwudili Levi Okeke (34), Udofia Edem Udosen (29), and Daniel Jacob Edet (30).
Parading the suspects, Azare revealed that the arrest was made possible by a tip-off from concerned journalists, who reported that the 13-year-old child had been subjected to repeated rape over a period of three years.
He said: “The operatives of the Command swiftly swung into action, arresting the suspects and launching a thorough investigation into the matter.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that one of the suspects, Okwudili Okeke, was recruited into sodomy and has had anal sex with several men in the state and this is a crime against humanity and will not be condoned”.
He said the suspects will soon be prosecuted after the completion of the investigation, even as he assured that justice will be served, and the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
Azare noted that the rescue of the victim and the arrest of the suspects demonstrated the commitment of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to protecting vulnerable members of society and upholding the rule of law.
