Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has thanked Unai Emery after he was sacked on Friday morning.
The Spaniard has departed north London after 18 months in charge, having overseen a poor run of form in recent weeks, with the Gunners winless in their last seven games across all competitions.
The pressure had been mounting on the former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain boss, but he remained defiant and stated that he was simply focused on the next game amid talk about his future.
However, the final straw was a 2-1 defeat at home against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday night, with the Gunners confirming his departure in a statement less than 24 hours later.
In the statement, which was published on Arsenal’s website, Josh Kroenke spoke on behalf of the Arsenal board and the club’s owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.
“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand,” Kroenke said. “We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”
First-team players Emiliano Martinez, David Luiz, Dani Ceballos and Calum Chambers have sent a message to the now ex-Gunners head coach.
And now Alexandre Lacazette has done the same.
“Not always easy when someone has to leave the club,” he tweeted. “But I want to the thank the coach and the staff for everything and wish good luck for the future.”
Lacazette was an unused substitute in Emery’s final game, but this social media post would suggest the pair have buried the hatchet.
The Frenchman scored twice against Southampton last weekend – including the stoppage time equaliser – but the striker was seen engaging in what looked like a heated row with the Spaniard in the second half.
