President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari will unveil the newly designed naira notes on Wednesday, according to governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee monthly meeting of the bank in Abuja on Tuesday said, he said: “100 days is enough for any person from any part of Nigeria to deposit his money in the bank and get his money when the new notes are released.

“For information, indeed, we are no longer waiting till December 15th to unveil and begin to release the new notes.

“By the special grace of God, tomorrow, which is the 23rd of November 2022, the President has graciously accepted to unveil the new currencies and the new currencies will be unveiled tomorrow at the Federal Executive Chamber by 10am.”

The newly designed naira notes are N1,000, N500 and N200 notes.

Emefiele had last month announced the plan to redesign the naira, saying the money being held by some individuals was higher than the one in circulation.

The development had generated mixed reactions, with some calling for the extension of the deadline.

But at the MPC meeting, Emefiele said the apex bank would not move the January 31, 2023 deadline for all old notes to be deposited to commercial banks.
