The Banquet Hall at the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) came alive on Tuesday October 11 as secondary school students gathered for the first event to mark the International Day of the Girl Child.
The International Day of the Girl Child comes up annually on 11th October. The main aims of the day are to promote girl’s empowerment and fulfillment of their human rights, while also highlighting the challenges that girls all over the world face.
This year’s commemoration has as its theme, EmPower Girls: Before, During and After Crisis.
NCWD in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the President is hosting a series of events between 16th to 18th October to commemorate the International Day of the Girl-Child.
Traditionally, countries set out time to mark the event locally and the Nigerian government kick-started its celebration of the girl child with the colorful, but enlightening session attended by a large collection of neatly dressed students at the banquet hall of NCWD.
Students from Airforce Comprehensive School, Sheik Abubakar Gumi Academy, Army Day Secondary School, Raberto School Abuja, shined brightly in the schools debate on the topic: “Should the Girl-Child be Equipped with Self Defense Skills?”.
This is as the students displayed their talent as six schools took to turns to depict playlets as part of the drama competition on, “Effect of Trafficking and Drug Abuse on Girl-Child Education”.
