Hopes of having human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi out on bail on Tuesday got dashed as the magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti denied him bail in the suit filed by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, against him over alleged cybercrime.
Recall that Farotimi, was remanded in a correctional centre by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State on Wednesday December 4th.
Farotimi, whose arrest has divided the public, was arraigned over alleged defamation of character in his new book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,’ in which he alleged, among other things, that a Senior Nigerian advocate, Afe Babalola, had compromised the Supreme Court.
The police counsel, Samson Osobu, argued that the bail application submitted by the defendant was incomplete and not properly filed.
Tuesday’s ruling runs contrary to the decision of the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, which granted Farotimi bail on Monday.
Meanwhile, Daily Trust, reports that Farotimi’s supporters, and those of Aare Babalola, clashed at the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
According to the paper, the opposing supporters got involved in a shouting match that almost became physical on the court premises.
Some human rights activists at the court expressed their angst at the adjournment of the ruling on the bail application.
Meanwhile, Babalola’s supporters slammed Farotimi for insulting an elder statesman and the plans of his supporters to stage a protest, saying that nobody has the right to disturb the peace of Ekiti State.
