DSS to investigate human rights abuses claims against agency-Seiyeda

Newly appointed Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Mr Mathew Seiyeda, on has said the case of the  National Security   Adviser to the Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Col Sambo Dasuki, (retd) will be reviewed.

 

This as he stated that allegations of human rights abuse by the agency including illegal detention and disobedience of court orders will be looked into.

 

Speaking at his first interaction with the press, Seiyefa, stressed that the DSS will henceforth adhere strictly to rule of law.

 

He said: ” We are reviewing all the cases of human rights abuse in the past, cases of illegal detention, disobedience to valid courts orders, harassment intimidation and what have you, which have affected the perception of the members of the Public against the Agency.

 

” We are operating under a democratic system, we must follow and obey the rules of law ‎in accordance with the constitution of the land, our mandate is to protect and project the National interest and not that of an individual, groups or organizations.

 

“Under no circumstances are we going to shark in carrying out this mandate to the letter, in course of carrying out the mandate, we are going to respect human rights of the citizens and the Foreign Nationals alike.

 

” Based on the new course we   want to take in order to change the wrong perception of the members of the public against the Agency, I met with the Staff yesterday to brief them of what need from them and. I have been receiving briefs from the various heads of departments and very soon I will speak out.

 

” I have spent 34 years in the Agency and all the happenings  here  are not new to‎ me and more so with my law  professional background, we will operate within the ambit of the law of the land as well operate open doors without compromising the national interest

 

” We will partner with all stake holders including other security agencies and the media as well in carrying out our mandate, we will intensify our intelligence gathering and analyzing processes , we will not tolerate the abuse of human  rights  and privileges, we will protect all law abiding citizevs and our friends from all over the war “.
