Jordan Pickford and Eric Dier were the heroes on Tuesday night as England won only their second ever penalty shootout – and their first for 22 years.
Gareth Southgate’s side are into the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Russia after a thrilling 4-3 win spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes against Colombia.

West Germany 1-1 England (Penalties 4-3)
After 120 minutes of tension in Turin, England’s first penalty shootout would decide a place in the World Cup final. The subsequent efforts from 12 yards out would go on to define two nations from the spot – Germany unerring, England choking at the critical moment, with Chris Waddle’s effort still in orbit around northern Italy.

Football came home in 1996, and so it was only fitting that that summer England what was – for 22 years – their only penalty shootout victory.
Roared on by a partisan Wembley crowd, they made it to the semi-finals after Fernando Hierro smashed the bar and David Seaman then saved from Miguel Angel Nadal.

Four days after seeing off the Spanish from 12 yards, England were met with the ghosts of six years earlier.
Germany once again were flawless from the spot, with David Seaman rendered little more than an interesting bystander as all six efforts zipped past him.
It was left to Gareth Southgate to be the fall guy, his miss later immortalised in an advert with Pizza Hut, but England missed out on glory in front of their own fans.

Nothing could separate Argentina after an epic 120-minute battle in St Etienne. The game is still remembered for Michael Owen’s solo goal, David Beckham’s red card and Sol Campbell’s disallowed goal.
That must come as a relief to David Batty, whose limp effort was easily parried by Carlos Roa, and consigned England to a last-16 exit at France 98.

Portugal again lied in wait for England, this time at the World Cup in Germany. Again nothing could separate them in 120 minutes, despite Wayne Rooney’s sending off.
Their efforts that day in Gelsenkirchen were their worst yet. Only Owen Hargreaves, who played his club football in Germany (notice a pattern?), found the back of the net.
The cream of the golden generation missed, Ricardo the nemesis once again, and it was left to Cristiano Ronaldo – the villain of the piece – to send them packing.
