As the nation and Civil Society Community struggle to come to terms with the sudden death of erudite lawyer and human rights activist, Barr. Esther Uzoma, Make A Difference Initiative (MAD) and Men Against Rape (MAR) have described her death as a monumental loss to the nation and humanity at large.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director of MAD, Lemmy Ughegbe and Director of Strategic Project of MAR, Augustine Eigbe, the group also noted that despite her passing away at a young age, she fulfilled her life purpose by turning her lemons to lemonades.
“Esther Uzoma had challenges in her younger years that would have consumed most other persons. But she was determined and resilient, so she overcame those challenges and turned her lemons to lemonades. It is those early experiences that she has used to inspire other women to stand up for their right and find their voices”, the statement reads.
It noted that “she devoted her life to working with women and other vulnerable groups to promote and protect their rights and seeking legal remedies where necessary.”
The group also applauded her role in helping the shape the country’s democratic norms and practices through her role in the Civil Society Situation Room where she was recently appointed as the convener.
“At a time when the National Assembly is working on the reform of the Elector Law, Ms. Uzoma’s input would be sorely missed especially in the ongoing debate by the National Assembly to smuggle underage voting into the Electoral Law”, the groups added.
They charged other activists and lawyers to take on the gauntlet and carry on from where she stopped, noting that “she has played her role very well and achieved in a short lifetime what most people who have lived twice her age could only dream of.”
“While we recognise her death as a collective loss to humanity, they prayed God to grant her children among whom are lawyers also, family and close friends the fortitude to bear the grave loss”, they added.
