Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has presented a staff of office to former Niger-Delta freedom fighter, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo and some other new traditional rulers.
Fubara urged the newly recognised traditional rulers in the state to ensure peace and stability within their domains, stressing the need to work in tandem with the government to protect lives and property.
The governor gave the charge on Tuesday during the presentation of Staff of Office and Certificates of Recognition according to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi, and made available to journalists.
The recognised monarchs are, HRM Winston Odize Alamina Oputibeya XII, Amanyanabo of Koniju in Okrika Local Government Area; HRM Eze Noble Friday Uwoh (CSP rtd), Eze Igbu-Ehuda (Ahoada) IV in Ahoada-East Local Government Area; HRH Prince Ike Ehie, Eze Igbu Orilukwoe in Ahoada-East Local Government Area; and HRH Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, Amanyanabo of Torusarama Piri in Degema Local Government Area.
He said, “Let me, on behalf of the government, congratulate the four of you. It has not been an easy journey to get to this point. Your recognition is not for personal aggrandizement but a call to service—a responsibility to help us protect lives and property in your domains.
“I don’t want you to see this elevation as another platform to create problems in your locality. We have the power to withdraw the recognition, but I do not intend to exercise such authority. I urge you to partner with the government to ensure the success of our administration in delivering the dividends of democracy to our people.”
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Charles Amadi, commended the governor for increasing the number of traditional rulers in the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, noting that the recognition included two Royal Majesties and two Royal Highnesses.
