Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, walked into the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday on crutches. Bello, joined other APC governors for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the controversial tenure elongation for the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. John Oyegun.
The governor’s attendance of the meeting on crutches confirmed the talk that spread across his state, that he was involved in an accident.
Back home in the Confluence State, the news of the accident was greeted with different reactions. While some expressed fears that the governor was seriously injured, others made a joke of the situation, jocularly saying the governor was running from his political foe Senator Dino Melaye, when he fell.
But the Director-General of the governor’s media office, Kingsley Fanwo, denied that the governor was seriously injured in a statement sent to Frontline News Online on Tuesday.
“We wish to refute speculations in some quarters that the Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, is either hospitalised or otherwise incapacitated,” the statement read.
“The governor missed his footing last Friday, March 30, 2018, while alighting from a vehicle and injured his left foot. He was treated by his doctors, who bandaged the leg and discharged him.
“We thank all the Governor’s supporters and well-wishers who reached us to inquire after his wellbeing. His Excellency is doing very well and will be at work as usual after the Easter holidays”, the statement further read.
Fanwo’s explanation notwithstanding, Governor Bello’s picture on crutches trended on the social media for most of
Thursday, with commentators making varying comments on why the governor visited Aso Rock Villa, with some insisting that the meeting was too crucial for any APC governor to miss, especially those who are believed to be disappointed with President Buhari’s change of position on the matter. The president recently declared tenure elongation for Oyegun and others as illegal. The governors after meeting with Buhari twice during the week, confirmed that there won’t be a tenure elongation for the APC national chairman, other state and national executives.
