Social media is abuzz of news of officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service seizing the passport of the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Word had it that the lawmaker was briefly held by immigration officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday morning while trying to board a flight to the United Kingdom.
Daily Trust reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan, arrived at the international terminal with her husband, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, only to be stopped and told that she could not travel because her name had been placed on a watch list.
After nearly an hour, she was cleared to board her British Airways flight.
An immigration source confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Thursday afternoon.
“Yes it is true that the Senator was blocked briefly from traveling,” the source said.
Women’s Groups and activists, including Aisha Yesufu and former minister for Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili have accused the Nigerian Senate of oppressing and using all its power to bully Akpoti. Aisha Yesufu and other activists joined Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in her failed attempt at resuming in the Senate on Thursday, following the judgment of the Federal Hight Court Abuja which declared her 6-month suspension as illegal.
