The Abia State Police Command has disclosed that the state recorded a high number of murders, conspiracies, and rape cases in August.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this on Wednesday during a livestream session across Facebook, X, and Instagram.
According to the PPRO, the crime chart of the state revealed that murder came tops, conspiracy followed behind, while rape was the third most committed offence in August.
She stressed that the offences, which the law classified as capital offences, put perpetrators at the risk of capital punishment, which could be as severe as a death sentence.
She said, “The top-three most committed crimes for last month (August) are murder, which tops the list, conspiracy as second, and rape and defilement.
“All of these crimes are capital offences. What I mean by capital offences is that they fall under felony. Capital offences are offences that are punishable by death or life imprisonment, and during investigation, police cannot grant bail because they are very serious offences.
“Section 319(1) of the Constitution says that the punishment for murder is a death sentence.”
Chinaka noted that the live session aimed at sensitising residents of the state and members of the public to police activities. She warned the public against involvement in crime.
“We are seizing this opportunity to say, ‘Let us say no to crime’ and ensure that we always control our emotions. Do not take the law into your hands, and ensure you report to the authorities, who are the police.
“For conspiracy, when anybody invites you to go and do anything unlawful or illegal, please, say no to that association,” she added.
The PPRO assured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring the security of lives and property.
PUNCH Metro had reported in August that the command arrested three suspects for armed robbery and cult-related activities, while exhibits were recovered.
Chinaka had listed the suspects as: “Udaka Justin, male, 36 years, of Akata Village, Orlu East LGA, Imo State; Chukwuebuka Michael Nlebedim, male, 24 years, of Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State; and Prince David, male, 24 years, of Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA, Imo State.”
In the same month, six suspected kidnappers were killed by the Abia command following a breakthrough in the investigation into the March 4, 2025, kidnapping and killing of the Managing Director of Dozzman Oil & Gas, Mazi Chidozie Confidence Chijioke, along Azumiri Road in Ukwa East Local Government Area of the state.
