Nigeria recorded its first national blackout for 2024 as national grid collapsed Sunday afternoon.
The collapse of the grid led to shut down of all 20 power plants, except Ibom Power with 31 megawatts.
The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) confirmed the first episode of the collapse saying the power outage was as a result of a system failure from the national grid “at 11:21 hours today, 4th February 2024 which has led to a nationwide power outage.”
Parts of Abuja had power restored at about 5pm.
The collapse of the national grid remains a pointer to Nigeria’s developmental challenges as in 2022 alone, the country’s national grid collapsed eight times.
