Apex Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar to apologise to the Igbo and the entire Southern Nigeria over his statement that northerners don’t need an Igbo or Yoruba president.
Atiku while speaking at Arewa Joint Committee interactive sessions with various presidential candidates of political parties on Saturday in Kaduna said northerners need their fellow northerner as candidate.
“What the average northerner needs is somebody from the north who understands other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country. This is what the northerner needs. He doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate”, Atiku could be heard saying in the viral clip.
But the spokesman of Ohanaeze, Alex Ogbonnia called on the PDP presidential candidate to apologise.
“That was a very provocative remark coming from a former vice president of Nigeria. His remark perhaps brings out his mindset about the country.
“It’s a Freudian slip. Something that slips from somebody’s mouth unintentionally, which reveals the persons deep feeling about something”, he said.
