Ondo to relocate market where truck killed over 20

Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State

Ondo state governor has ordered the relocation of Ibaka Markt in Akungba Akoko in Akoko South West council area, after a trailer rammed into two cars and eight motorcycles killing at least 20 people on Saturday.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu visited the scene and ordered the market be sited in safer location.

Witnesses have put the number of dead at 30, saying two other cars—a Camry and a Corolla—were also involved.

Police spokesman Tee-Leo Ikoro said only 10 were confirmed dead in the crash.

“As we speak now ten people have been confirmed dead in the accident and we can still have more because we still have many people trapped under the trailer,” Ikoro said.

About eight commercial motorcycles were crushed after the trailer loaded bags of ric lost its brakes.

Many of the women killed in the market were traders from neighbouring towns like Ikare and Oka, also in Akoko.

The eyewitness said the accident occurred at about 7.30pm.
