The minister for Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami has called on the board of commissioners of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to prioritise consumer protection in performing its duties.
The minister made the call at the inauguration ceremony for a new member of the commissioners’ board, Prof. Mansur Bindawa, held at NCC’s Communications and Digital Economy Complex on Monday.
He said: “I want to use this opportunity to remind the board of its responsibility. The main responsibility of the board is to ensure consumer protection. We are the consumers, the board must ensure that our interests as Nigerians, as consumers are well protected.
“Also the board has power to approve licenses…there are different categories of licenses. The board also has power to approve regulations governing the commission. It is because of these responsibilities that I hope that Prof. Mansur who is about to join the board now will be another good addition, who will support the board and consolidate its achievements”.
Speaking on Bindawa’s appointment to NCC’s board of commissioners, the minister said it was done in implementation of the law guiding the NCC which states that the board be constituted of nine members. He further explained that Bindawa was appointed to fill a vacancy, following the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Pantami assured that the NCC board of commissioners is constituted of experienced professionals with relevant skills and proven integrity.
Earlier in his address, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, said Monday’s inauguration of the latest member of the board of commissioners was done in fulfilment of NCC’s mandate, which he added that the minister has supported the agency executing.
Danbatta described Mansur’s appointment as well deserved.
‘This is being done in fulfilment of our mandate which the minister has taken seriously and has been executing since his appointment in 2019. To the new board member, I want to congratulate you and wish you Allah’s guidance in the discharge of this important responsibility”, he said.
On his part, Mansur expressed readiness to contribute to the effectiveness of the board, this is even as he thanked the President for the opportunity to serve, saying, “I appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari for giving me this opportunity to serve Nigeria. Insha’Allah, I will do my best to improve on the achievements so far made at the NCC”.
