National Coordinator of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aspirants Forum, Lt. Col. Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (retd) has described the ruling party as in dire need of reforms.
Speaking to journalists at the National Executive Council meeting of the Forum held in Abuja on Tuesday, he said his group therefore supports the setting up of the Chief Bisi Akande-led National Reconciliation Committee.
The 12-Man National Reconciliation Committee which also has Governor Oyetola Adegoyega of Osun State and Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger State as members was set up at the behest President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Yar’Adua the reconciliation of aggrieved persons and groups within the APC should be the first step to reforming the party .
He said: “Everybody knows what happened in 2019, the primaries conducted by APC threw up a lot of challenges. This happened in other political parties. But in our own case because of the respect we have for the President, we decided to calm our nerves and come together to the needful. We came together to work for the success of our party
“You can see that we succeeded because the our president came back, a number of our governors are back and even those we contested against in the primaries won”.
“So what we are trying to do now is to compliment what is being done to ensure that the party survives till 2023. Most importantly, we know that our party has no option but to carry out reforms. In fact, you can see that the President recently directed the party to form a National Reconciliation Committee now headed by Chief Bisi Akande.
“I believe that very soon they will start to go around the states to engage party members so that they can collate the challenges and see how we can move forward as a party”, Yar’Adua added.
Also speaking at the meeting,, Grand Patron of the Forum and former minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sani Zangon Daura, stressed the need for unity with the APC.
He however observed that party loyalty and oneness can only be sustained through a display of transparency by leaders of the party.
Zangon-Daura expressed hope that President Buhari’s move to reconcile APC members will work.
He said: “All that is important in any organisation, what is necessary is justice. Once that is displayed, and leaders are open much of the problems will go.
“But when you are dubious, unreliable and unstable, you do not expect the loyalty of anybody.
“So, I hope conflict resolution mechanisms have been put in place to see how the issues can be resolved”.
