The pioneer Director General of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF, Osaro Onaiwu has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to rescue the party before the crisis in PDP degenerated to something else.
The party has in the past few weeks embroiled in a crisis that is almost tearing the PDP apart.
The crisis in PDP had last week took another dimension, when some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and national officers called for the resignation of the party National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
Aside the call by the party elected national officers, a High Court in Degema, Rivers State had ordered the removal of Secondus as a member of the party, as well as National Chairman of PDP.
The court had also ordered that from the 23rd of August 2021, Prince Uche Secondus should stop parading himself as a National Chairman.
This development had on Tuesday caused serious division in the party, as two Deputy National Chairmen laid claim to the National Chairman’s seat. The two deputies are; Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, Deputy National Chairman (South) and Senator Nazif Sulieman (PDP Deputy National Chairman, (North).
But the Constitution of the party specifically stated that, if the National Chairman of the party resigned or removed, he shall handover to the deputy national Chairman from his region. Section 45 (2) of the party Constitution said: “In the case of the National Chairman, he shall hand over to the Deputy National Chairman from his own region/part of the country who shall, without prejudice to Section 47 (6) of this Constitution, act as the National Chairman pending the election of a replacement.”
Onaiwu, has, however, called on the PDP governors led by Aminu Tambuwal to rescue the party before the crisis snowball into another major issue like in the days of Ahmadu Sheriff.
Onaiwu said: “This is not good for PDP at this time. This is the time PDP family should unite to rescue this nation from the misrule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Members of PDP shouldn’t been seen fighting this time. This is the time to strategize ahead of 2023 election. Nigerians are looking unto PDP to deliver this nation from APC.
“Governors elected on the platform of PDP led by Tambuwal should come together now to rescue the party from this self-inflicted crisis. This is my advice.”
