On Tuesday, 18th July, Senator Betty Apiafi, DSSRS, joined the Nigerian First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu to officially immortalise the iconic former Nigerian First Lady, Mrs. Maryam Babangida, at the unveiling of the renamed National Centre for Women Development (NCWD). The Centre is now to be known as the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD).
Senator Apiafi was also was one of the trailblazing women inducted into the prestigious Nigerian Women Hall of Fame domiciled at the MBNCWD as sponsor of the bill to rename and reposition the Centre. This is as she was presented with a merit award for her outstanding commitment to gender inclusion and empowerment.
Recall that as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Sen. Betty Apiafi, in 2022, sponsored the bill for the renaming of the National Centre for Women Development after HE Late. Dr. Maryam Babangida (SB.1042). The bill which reads “The National Centre For Women Development Act CAP N15, LFN 2004, (Amendment) Bill, 2022 To Enhance The Functions of The Centre And Rename The Centre After H.E. Late. Dr. Maryam Babangida And For Related Matters” (SB.1042), was passed and signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amongst the dignitaries who graced the occasion are the wife of the Vice-President, Hajia Nana Shettima, wives of governors, members of the National Assembly, sons of Late. Maryam Babangida; Mohammed and Aminu Babangida, former minister for Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, DG, Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, Dr. Asabe Bashir Vitalis, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Monilola Udoh, and others.
The portrait of the First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu was officially unveiled at the glamorous event.
