Senate 2023: Gov Umahi Loses Bid To Run For Senate

…As court declares Mrs Agom-eze APC Ebonyi South Senatorial candidate

Mrs Ann Agom-eze has defeated His Excellency, Engr David Umahi today at the Federal High Court, Abakalili. She came second in the APC senatorial primary election for Ebonyi South Zone. Engr David Umahi’s younger brother, Austin Umahi came first. Austin Umahi withdrew from the election and relinquished the ticket to the Governor. INEC frowned at it and omitted Engr David Umahi’s name as it never monitored the rerun exercise announcing Umahi as APC Senatorial candidate.

The Governor went to Federal High Court in Abakaliki, seeking an order of court for INEC to publish his name as a senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South. Ann Agom-eze applied to be joined in the suit.

Delivering judgment this morning, Justice Riman cited Section 115 of the 2022 Electoral Act which forbids a person from standing two different primary elections in the same year. The judge said anyone found to have participated in two primary elections risks a two year jail term and declared Mrs Ann Agom-eze as the validly nominated APC Senatorial candidate since Austin Umahi withdrew from the race.
