The Senate has reacted to the judgment by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which nullified the six-month suspension handed suspended lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Justice Binta Nyako, in her judgment on Friday, ordered the Senate to reinstate the Kogi Central senator, describing her suspension as excessive.
In March, the Senate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months.
The decision followed the adoption of recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, which found the Kogi lawmaker guilty of misconduct and failure to appear before the committee.
As part of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details will be withdrawn, and she will be barred from accessing the National Assembly complex.
Her office would also be locked, and her legislative aides would not receive their salaries during this period. The Senate further ruled out reconsidering her suspension until the six-month term ends or she submits a formal apology.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, challenged her suspension in court.
Delivering her judgment on the matter, Justice Nyako faulted the provision of Chapter Eight of the Senate Standing Rules as well as Section 14 of the Legislative Houses, Powers & Privileges Act, declaring both as overreaching.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, challenged her suspension in court.
