
South African anti-apartheid icon Winnie Mandela has died aged 81, her personal assistant says.
Winnie Madikizela Mandela was the former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela.
Winnir was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela on September 26th 1936.
She was a South African activist and politician who has held several government positions and headed the African National Congress Women’s League.
She was a member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee.
