Women belonging to the South West caucus of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) have demanded that their zone produces the party’s next national chairman.
The main opposition party has been enmeshed in a leadership crisis, with the national convention of the party slated for October as part of fence-mending actions reached by major stakeholders in the party.
Specifically, spokesperson of the South West Women Vanguard, Mrs. Shola Ibidun Kola, has said the zone has a long list of credible, experienced and capable individuals to lead the party. She stressed that overlooking the South-West in the search for the replacement for Mr. Uche Secondus, the current National Chairman will not only be unfair but detrimental to plans to reposition the party for electoral victory in 2023.
Kola called on the chairman of the party’s zoning committee and governor of Enugu State, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi alongside his deputy, Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue State to ensure that the PDP returns to its winning ways by zoning the office of national chairman to the South West.
She said: “Through its tradition of zoning of offices and positions, the PDP entrenched fairness, equity and a sense of belonging among stakeholders. It based on this tested and worthy culture, that we the women of the South West are demanding that the new leader of our party emerges from our zone.
“We can remember that part of the issues which led to our losing the presidential election in 2015 was the South West being overlooked for this same office and its people felt snubbed by the PDP leading to them returning the favour by voting another party. We must ask ourselves if we want a repeat of this even as the South West remains the toughest battle ground for the 2023 election?”
“For those of us who want our party to return to power at the center and also for Nigeria to commence the healing process, we are making the call for the right and expedient decisions to be made ahead of our national convention in October”, she added.
