The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of the governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun.
The appellants, Ladi Adebutu and the Peoples Democratic Party prayed the apex court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections in the 99 polling units where elections were allegedly cancelled.
The Appeal Court, Lagos Division, had in a split decision on November 24, 2023, affirmed Abiodun’s re-election.
The case was the same for Nasarawa State governor, as the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, dismissed the appeal filed by David Umbugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party, challenging Sule’s victory.
In the judgement, Ms Kekere-Ekun said, “The issues in this appeal are resolved against the appellant. The appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed.”
She added the Court of Appeal in Abuja was right to have “set aside the decision of the tribunal” which had declared Mr Umbugadu the winner of the poll.
In the case of Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, a five-member panel of the apex court, in a unanimous decision, held that there was no merit in an appeal that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Mohammed Ashiru, filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election that was held in the state on March 18, 2023.
For the Delta State governorship election, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed all three appeals to overturn Sheriff Oborevwori’s election as governor of Delta State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the March 18 governorship election.
But unsatisfied, the three parties headed to the court. While Oborevwori was victorious in the tribunal and at the appeal court, the parties pushed the matter to the Supreme Court.
When the case came up at the apex court, it upheld the earlier judgments and affirmed Oborevwori’s win in the Delta governorship. The Supreme Court first dismissed Ovie Omo-Agege’s appeal seeking to overturn Governor Oborevwori’s election.
The apex court held that the appellant was unable to prove his case of over-voting and noncompliance with the electoral laws.
