President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zach Adedeji, and other officials at the State House, Abuja.

Zulum’s visit follows weeks of complaints from the governor over strategic gains of the jihadist factions of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

On May 19, the governor complained that the group was one town away from overrunning Marte Local Government Area.

According to United Nations estimates, the insurgency in the Northeast, which began in 2009, has claimed over 350,000 lives, both directly and indirectly, and displaced over two million people.

Despite repeated claims of degrading Boko Haram, security agencies continue to grapple with attacks, ambushes and bombings, particularly in Borno and Yobe states.

Also meeting the President is the FIRS Chief, Adedeji, whose visit comes after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike ordered the sealing of the Federal Inland Revenue Service office in Abuja due to non-payment of ground rent for 25 years.

Albeit, the revenue agency criticised the Federal Capital Territory Administration over the closure, describing the action as “malicious” and “unprofessional.”

The President also received in audience the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, Minister of Budget and National Development, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

President Tinubu also held separate meetings with the Chief Executive Officer of the South East Development Commission, Mark Okoye II.

Okoye recently announced the commitment of the commission to driving the South East region towards a $200bn economy by 2035, contributing to President Tinubu’s $1tn GDP vision.
