Popular broadcaster, Adaora Onyechere has been appointed into African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOC) for Nigeria.
Onyechere a former presenter of African Independent Television morning show, Kakaaki, was inaugurated as chairperson of the Women and Gender Affairs Cluster Committee of the council on Thursday in Abuja at a ceremony chaired by the Etsu of Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.
ECOSOCC is to provide an opportunity for African Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to play an active role in contributing to the AU’s principles, policies and programmes. ECOSOCC’s functions include, contributing, through advice, to the effective translation of the AU’s objectives, principles and policies into concrete programmes, as well as evaluating those programmes. The council also plays a role in the realisation of the AU’s vision and objective and to contributing to the promotion of human rights, the rule of law, good governance, democratic principles, gender equality and child rights.
Onyechere who also presented and produced TV programme, Gender Agenda said at the event that she was committed to mainstreaming issues that affect women through her committee.
She said: “The Women and Gender Affairs Cluster committee is tasked with responsible for leading, guiding, defending and coordinating the AU Ecosoc efforts on gender equality and development and promoting women’s empowerment by ensuring that African countries comply with the AU Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality.
“With this unit comes a call for the unification of our goals through effective support systems across Africa ranging from financial inclusion, priority toward literacy, orientation and activation of gender budgeting across Africa”.
“Today as the social call mounts on the development of Africa, sustainability is key and requires deliberate actions such as this passion, fairness and dexterity will be my guiding charge towards ensuring the gap for women’s role is brought to the fore and activate innovations and policies that mainstream women across all sectors”, she added.
