Tribute: Onyeka Onwenu A Diva Worthy Of Celebration

By Kemi Yesufu

Onyeka Onwenu was an A-List African celebrity for all of her life.

At a time the entertainment industry was largely seen as the enclave of the uneducated never-do-wells, Onyeka, an American educated Masters degree holder burst into the scene after a brief stint in broadcasting.

She came ahead of her time

She was excellent singer with a captivating voice, a joy to watch on stage even in her older years. When she accepted roles in Nollywood, she delivered with such grace and magnificence. She reportedly died a few minutes after a performance.

She never stopped performing.

Onyeka was indeed a DIVA.

Outside of music and acting, Onyeka Onwenu, served as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. She chronicled her experience at the agency in her autobiography which I have been planning to buy. Now, I would have to visit Roving Heights for a copy.

It is national icons like Ms Onyeka Onwenu who should be celebrated by naming streets and monuments after them.

I hope the nation and Imo State gives her burial worthy of her iconic status and outstanding contributions to the creative industry.

May her elegant soul rest in peace.
