By Bukola Kayode

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has joined the long list of people who have criticised Presidential flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for saying the north does not need a Yoruba or Igbo presidential candidate.

Wike spoke at the Port Harcourt International Airport on arrival from his trip to Spain.

The Rivers State Governor travelled to Spain with his counterparts; Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

Atiku while speaking at Arewa Joint Committee interactive sessions with various presidential candidates of political parties on Saturday in Kaduna said northerners need their fellow northerner as candidate.

“What the average northerner needs is somebody from the north who understands other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country. This is what the northerner needs. He doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate”, Atiku could be heard saying in the viral clip.

Though Wike expressed doubts that such a statement came from Atiku, he however, said such a statement a period of transition for the nation gives more reason for the call for equity, fairness and justice.
