The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be spending N1.3 billion for staff welfare next year.

The huge sum is to be spent on funeral grants, Christmas bonus and severance allowances of staff members, among others.

The commission’s budget of N140bn for 2022 is under consideration by the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya.

The line item reads: “Welfare package for members and staff of the commission to cover funeral grants/condolence purse, 1st 28 days claims on first appointment/transfers, severance allowances of public officers, transport allowances on retirement for career officers, Christmas/ Bonus etc.”

This is as N200 million was earmarked for statutory and electoral audit of the commission’s accounts apart from the N30 million budgeted for Audit/Investigation support service.

The commission also proposed N3 billion for social contribution, N77 million for utilities, N2.4 billion for overhead and N97 million for materials and supplies.

The breakdown also showed that maintenance will gulp N107 million; fuel, N160 million; financial charges, N260 million; and electoral hazard and other allowances, N11.6 billion.

The N11.6 billion electoral hazard and other allowances is different from N600 million life insurance for INEC staff.
