The Member Representing Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency, Rep. Nicholas Mutu has debunked claims in a story published by Premium Times in which he was described as a serial law breaker.
This as the lawmaker declared that he did not broken Nigeria’s laws.
Mutu argued that the online medium got it wrong in interpreting the country’s laws as according to him a Nigerian legislator who is not a presiding officer is allowed under the Nigerian law to be a director of a company.
He said: ”The law allows a member of the House of Representatives to be a Director of a company as we are not pensionable, it is only the Presiding officers, like the Speaker or his Deputy that are not allowed to a Directors of a company. Governors and their Deputies are equally not allowed to be Directors of a company as they are all pensionable. Members of the State House of Assembly can also be Directors of companies.
“I want also to state clearly that I am not a signatory to any foreign, company, I am not a signatory to any foreign account, I am not a signatory to any company account in Nigeria” he added.
Mutu noted that the story is the handiwork of his political opponents adding that he cannot be distracted knowing fully well that he has not breached the laws of the land.
Reacting to the allegations of fraud and the case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mutu stated that the case is before the courts and as such is subjudice and should not be commented on.
