Harris Vs Trump First Debate Highlights

By Kemi Yesufu

The debate started with Senator Kamala Harris stretching her hand for a handshake, introducing herself, with Trump confidently taking her hand.

Both candidates looked confident for most of the debate, Harris displayed 100% confidence even when Trump disrespectfully referred to Biden as Harris ‘ boss.

On the economy, Harris said she will support the middle class and small business. She talked about her idea of ‘opportunity economics’. She told Americans ‘Trump has no plans for you’.

Still on the economy, Trump blamed immigrants whom he described as criminals for taking black and Hispanic jobs. He also blamed the Biden Administration for the inflation rates.

On the contentious issue of abortion : (choice or life). Trump claimed Democrats want access to abortions up to the night month ! He said he is proud to have appointed the Supreme Justices who upturned Roe V Wade. Harris countered Trump by saying what pro-choice supporters want is women having the freedom to make a choice on their bodies especially in cases of pregnancy complications, rape of incest.

The argument on immigration was heated as expected. Harris accused Trump of killing the bill to recruit more personnel to police America’s boarders in order to run on the migration problem. Trump described migrants as primitive people who eat Americans’ pets in towns and cities.

Trump stuck with his campaign rhetoric bringing in migration on issues like the economy and even the attack on Congress on January 6. Even when asked about his discrediting the electoral process because of the election he lost to Biden, he asked why Biden is ‘allowing’ people across the boarder and insisted that he lost the last election ‘by whiskers’.In her response Harris told Trump world leaders she has met call him a disgrace even as she noted that the former President is blatantly denying court cases and other actions taken to upturn the election.

Both candidates spoke on the Israeli V Hamas and the Russia/Ukraine war. When asked why he claimed Harris recently started claiming to be black, Trump said he doesn’t care if his opponent is black or Indian. Harris on her part chose to highlight Trump’s history of discriminating against black people. She didn’t categorically speak on what race she identifies as, arguing that a leader should unite people .

Harris refused to go personal despite Trump’s attempts get her to deny Biden.

There was a lot of back and forths.

Overall, both candidates gave a good account themselves with Harris having an edge over Trump as she answered questions precisely on all the key issues and she was unruffled by Trump’s attempts at unsettling her.

Harris also adhered to instructions much better than Trump did.
