Personnel of the Lagos State police command fired teargas canisters at persons who staged a protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex on Wednesday over ongoing demolitions in several communities.
The Cable reports that the protesters had gathered at the assembly complex to oppose the demolitions affecting Makoko, Owode Onirin, Oworonshoki, Otumara and Baba-Ijora, but they were met with a tough response from the police.
The residents of the affected area say the state government of carrying out the demolition exercises without adequate consultation, compensation or resettlement plans.
Journalists, were on ground to cover the protest, were also hit by the teargas, while some demonstrators were arrested by the police officers.
