The Super Eagles shook off their disapointing opening draw against Equatorial Guinea at the ongoing African Cup of Nations, to defeat hosts, Côte d’Ivoire 1-0.

Captain William Troost-Ekong scored a second-half penalty to give Nigeria the much needed victory.

The game saw Jose Peseiro make changes in his starting 11 with Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina, and Samuel Chukwueze in the line-up.

The win took the Eagles, on four points, to second behind Equatorial Guinea who also are on four points.

Up next for the Eagles is their final group game against Guinea-Bissau on 22 January while Côte d’Ivoire will face Equatorial Guinea in a must-win tie.

In the group’s other game, Equatorial Guinea defeated Guinea-Bissau 4-2.

Meanwhile the Super Eagles striker and African Footballer of the Year 2023, Victor Osimhen was named the Man-of-The-Match-Award for the hard fought match.

The penalty was won by the Napoli striker after he was brought down by the Ivorien defender in the penalty box. After the Video Assistance Referee (VAR) checked the foul, it was eventually awarded.

Speaking after the crunch tie, Osimhen praised his team, saying, “First and foremost, it was a fair game and we needed to convert the penalty when the opportunity came our way and I am happy that Troost-Ekong converted the penalty.

“I am really proud of the team’s victory and we look forward to the next game.”
